From Market Hall to Ruin bar, Budapest - Part 2
Solo travel, city walking and bar hopping in Budapest. What a city, what an atmosphere. Hostel life did not disappoint, and neither did the city. Yesterday was full of impressions and lots and lots of walking. Day no. 2 was a good mix of stores, thrift shops and an ever-so-small bar round.
Flow Space's hostel is located right next to "The Great Market Hall", which is an impressive hall full of stalls selling everything from fish, produce, DIY crafts to local bakeries and traditional dishes. With breakfast in hand I began my morning walk in search of some places I had looked at the night before.
Budapest really lives up to its reputation as a fantastic city full of life and energy, and not least reasonable prices. It is incredibly easy to navigate around to the various areas, and even though the center is quite large, I ended up walking around all weekend. The walk took me further towards the opera house and eastwards, where I spent the time looking at historic buildings, impressive synagogues and colorful vintage shops.
I had started the day a bit earlier than the others, and for the early birds out there, they probably recognize that on such weekend trips it is important to get the most out of the days. Sleeping can always be done at home. After wandering around for a few hours, a couple of WhatsApp messages ticked in, and met up with some people for lunch and refills. Budapest offers many charming coffee bars filled with good food and a lively atmosphere, and we had enough to recharge our batteries towards the evening.
Traveling solo is just so much fun! especially when staying in a hostel, or finding a place where it is easy to get in touch with other travellers. And fortunately there had been no problem in Budapest.
It was Saturday evening and back at the hostel there was plenty of activity in the common area. So we left everything in our doorms and sat down with a cold, cheap beer from the kiosk down the street. The evening took us on to a cozy local bar for beer tasting, before we ended up in a unique bunker-like cellar. Where it was just us, foosball, and a friendly bartender joining the party. We ended the bar tour at the iconic "Szimpla Kert" - a ruin bar known for its unique atmosphere with several floors of retro decor and interesting people, and we stayed there for the rest of the night.
