A city worth visting - Budapest, part 3
For solo travellers, a family vacation, a bachelorette party or a boy's trip, Budapest is a city worth considering for your next destination! And for someone who is on her way into the nomadic life, it is a place I would like to spend a longer period of time. It was easy to meet people, plenty of things to find and reasonable prices. Maybe next year?
Nightclub at daytime, Rose gelato and river cruise
Despite a late but memorable evening, the day started early. Although it might be tempting to stay in bed after a night out, wasting a sunny day in Budapest was certainly not an option. The city still had a lot to offer and I had a whole day to explore as much as possible.
During the day, Szimpla Kert was transformed into a lively and colorful market. This was a completely different experience to the pulsating club atmosphere from the night before. The ruin bar, which last night had been dark and full of neon paint, was now filled with stalls and live music. The area was full of activity and things to see. I then met up with one of the guys I had met during the trip for lunch. And he was soon on his way to hop on a train to Berlin, so it was nice to talk a bit more before we had to say goodbye. That's how it is when traveling, you can cross paths with the most random people and it feels like you've known them for years, but most often you end up going your separate ways.
Before he left, we stopped by a gelato bar called Gelarto Rosa, where we met two others from the night before. This ice cream shop is located right next to Saint Stephen's Basilica and the long queue hinted that this was quite a popular place. A gelato is a gelato, but it tasted a little extra in the heat when it was shaped like a rose.
The days go by quickly when you're having fun, and suddenly it was time for dinner again. We sat down at a restaurant in the main street, then popped into The Pointer Pub & Restaurant, located on Váci u for a beer. After that it was time for what became one of the highlights of the trip.
River cruise on the Danube
To end the last day, it was finally time to get on a river cruise which in the evening took us up and down the main part of the Danube river. Budapest's skyline was absolutely beautiful from the water, and especially in the evening light as the sun was setting. Along the river there are many who offer such evening cruises, party boat trips and day cruises where you can either buy a ticket from one of the sellers standing in the streets, or right at the quay point. A boat trip along the river is absolutely worth doing if the weather is good, and it was the perfect end to a great long weekend!
After my experience in this city, Budapest is really to be recommended on all counts! With nature, tour sights, city walks, markets, vintage selection, nightlife and good food and drink, it will be difficult not to find something you like. And for those reading this and considering a trip alone, there are many people who travel through this city, which makes it easy to get to know other solo travelers.
After the cruise it was back to Flow Spaces Hostel and pack the bag before the next morning, when the trip went back to everyday life in Norway and the May 17th celebration.
